Some folks are waffling on this issue. We need to be clear that we should not allow abortion for any reason, and that makes this Bill before Congress a good thing!
“The United States is one of only seven nations to allow abortion on-demand after [20 weeks gestation], putting us in the company of human-rights violators such as China and North Korea. A large majority of Americans, including women, young people, Independents, and Hispanics support the Pain-Capable bill. This modest measure even splits Democrats and we expect the House to pass this bill this week with bipartisan support.”
This is critical for folks to understand! Yes, in reality, it’s a compromise in the fight for life, but it’s a very good compromise in that it sets a precedent, and allows us to further explore the concept of “When life begins”.
As the Bible tells us, God is intimately associated with the person from the moment of conception (even before actually). Read in the Gospels about John the Baptist and our Lord Jesus. Of course there are other examples, e.g., Psalm 139 where King David says “You knit me together in my mother’s womb”. The point being that the Bible states it and we KNOW IN OUR HEARTS that it’s true, even if you look at it from a Biology 101 standpoint!
The simplest way to debunk the “Not a person before being born” myth is to ask anyone at all: “Were you a person when you were a fertilized egg in your mother’s womb?” If they answer “No” then you can simply dismiss them on the same basis that they have just answered that question! “Life” is not arbitrary and neither is personhood. Those who’ve made arbitrary decisions about who is and who is not a person fall into the likes of Adolph Hitler who said “Jews are not people”. Then there was Stalin who said “White Russians are not people” and Mao who said “Nationalist Chinese are not people” and the Hutus who said that “Tutsis are not people” and so on…
If you leave it open to human reason, then men will rationalize and justify murder with all kinds of reasons to not consider someone as “People”. The “Law” is supposed to be conservative in its estimates, especially where there is some doubt, and always rule on the side of solid conservative ground. In other words, if there is doubt as to whether a person becomes a person at birth, or may be a person at some point earlier in the gestation cycle, then the LAW SHOULD RULE on the side of CAUTION and state that “We don’t know, therefore we should not allow possible humans to be killed”.
But what does Biology 101 teach us? A fertilized egg has all the same genome as the adult will have, it is “Complete” in terms of the genetic sense. It is also “Alive” by all available definitions of “Life” that we can apply to it from basic biology. It is not an adult, but it is a member of the species Homo sapiens every bit as much as a caterpillar is the same species as the butterfly it will become. It is also the same as the notion that an eagle’s egg is an eagle, and a chicken egg is a chicken. There are numerous laws on the books protecting turtle eggs, in fact, for the very same reason, they are TURTLES and are protected since they can become ADULT turtles!
We all of us started as little itty bitty teeny tiny fertilized eggs inside our mother’s body, and we were every bit persons then just like we are now, we were just very very small.
