Major Richard “Dick” Winters, Retired, passed today. He was a great American Hero in my book. Although he was made famous in the HBO Miniseries called “Band of Brothers” (based on the book of the same name by Stephen Ambrose), he was famous in his own right as a small unit infantry leader. His attack on a German artillery position on D-Day was used as a textbook example of “how it’s done” for years after WWII ended. He not only led his men in combat, but some years after the war was instrumental in reuniting many of the men who served under him in “Easy Company.”
A great man, a great soldier, and a true leader who cared about his men and their lives after combat. I look forward to meeting him in Heaven, I’m sure he’s heaven bound! You were a great one Dick Winters – you are missed!
